    The Storm

Brace yourselves, more Game of Thrones puns are coming.

Winter finally arrived on The Walking Dead Season 9 episode 16, but unlike the raging snowstorm that engulfed the communities, it was mostly uneventful. However, that's somewhat forgiving considering that last weeks emotional rollercoaster was a tough act to follow.

Getting a glimpse of how the groups deal with the elements while trying to survive is something that has never gotten depicted before. And while it did a decent job of showcasing that and would have been a great standalone episode, but as a season finale, it didn't quite work.

"The Storm" had a lot of promise going into the episode, as the idea of being a part of the groups physical and emotional journey through the harshness of winter while dealing with the dead was a very intriguing scenario.

The closest we've ever been to experiencing that situation previously was during The Walking Dead Season 3, where Rick an...

    The Calm Before

We knew it was coming, but nothing could have prepared us for that heartbreaking scene.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 15 was hands down the best and most emotional episode this season. Yes, even more so than Rick's farewell. It was that good.

And if you thought Michonne's child massacre on The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 14 was disturbing, it was only the tip of the iceberg.

"The Calm Before" was anything but. Sure there were moments of joy and tranquility sprinkled throughout, but all that did was instill viewers with a constant feeling of dread which loomed throughout the entirety of the episode.

Happiness has always been short-lived on The Walking Dead, so we knew something catastrophic was on the horizon.

The crossing over the river may be gone but we rebuilt a bridge none the less.

Time heals all wounds, but the scars from being branded by brainwashed psycho children remain forever.

Okay, I may have taken some liberties with that quote, but the point is that The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 14 at long last addressed the trauma Michonne was subjected to in the years following Rick's sacrifice.

It was probably one of the weakest episodes in the season, but at the very least, the root of Michonne's severe trust issues was brought to light.

Michonne's season-long reluctance in helping newcomers and overprotectiveness of her people has been a substantial lingering question for viewers throughout most of the season. But the answer we've all been inquisitively searching for was finally revealed.

    And it was heartbreaking.

Michonne: What if I never find him?
Jocelyn: You might not. But if you give up now, then you definitely never will. And you can't live with that, can you?

The Whisperer war is officially underway.

On The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 13, Daryl, Connie, Henry, and Lydia were on the run following their escape from the Whisperers' camp, while the Kingdom attempted to deal with a threat of their own.

"Chokepoint" was a terrific follow-up to The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 12, even though it included the inexplicable introduction of a new group that didn't feel entirely necessary.

With the Kingdom's preparations close to being completed, the fair was put in jeopardy when a new group called the "Highway Men" were threatening its success.

What neck of the woods did these misfits crawl out of? Was anyone else completely baffled as to how this group had never been encountered previously?

Do you want to keep your head? Never question Alpha's leadership.

On The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 12, Henry tracked down Lydia and the Whisperers but bit off more than he could chew, and Negan offered to prove his worth in Alexandria.

"Guardians" provided an interesting -- and horrific -- glimpse into the Whisperers' way of life. If you thought the standoff at Hilltop was disturbing, seeing how this particular group of walker skin-wearing savages live was equally unsettling.

Was anyone else surprised by the sheer amount of Whisperers at their camp? We knew that the group was fairly established and had numbers, but I was blown away by how large their group actually is.

However, aside from the infant Whisperer from The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 11, I didn't notice any other children living among them, which is both interesting and concerning.

Wouldn't it be something if some of the Saviors ended up joining the Wh...

Alpha is a serious force to be reckoned with.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 11 continued the tense standoff at the Hilltop when Alpha came knocking in search of her daughter. It was a thrilling episode that that displayed just how vicious and cutthroat the Whisperer leader is.

That included an unnerving scene involving an infant whisperer.

This series has been in desperate need of a creepy and intriguing villain. Negan was imposing and brutal, but his over-the-top schtick got tiresome very quickly. However, I think that had more to do with Negan being featured so prominently when he initially arrived.

It's as if the writers were so excited to introduce Negan into the series that they doubled down on his character's popularity from the comics, but it mostly backfired.

    When The Dead Come Knocking

Jeez, Lydia is one messed up individual.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 10 went in an interesting direction by diving into Lydia's past as we discovered just how twisted her mother is.

It was a surprising decision to touch upon Lydia and Alpha's backstory so soon, but it was an enthralling glimpse into both character's pasts that provided some great twists and juicy revelations along the way.

Flashbacks have always been far and few between on this series, so when they do occasionally make an appearance they always put a compelling story on display, and "Omega" was no exception.

Was anyone else surprised by the decision to showcase Lydia and her mother's past so soon?

    Cellmates

Those cells at Hilltop are filling up quickly, wouldn't you say?

The wait is over as The Walking Dead made its mid-season return and tossing us right back into the mix of things without missing a beat. And while The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 9 wasn't without its share of issues, it did succeed in propelling the story forward in dramatic fashion.

It's only been a few episodes, but I for one haven't missed Andrew Lincoln's presence. It's difficult to say if that's due to having the introduction of the Whisperers as a fun distraction or if the rest of the cast stepping into the spotlight has made the characters more well-rounded and engaging.

Regardless, here we are more than halfway through the season. And the fact that Rick's absence hasn't negatively impacted the overall pacing is worth noting. However, that doesn't mean the writing isn't still prone to falling into a creative rut from time to time.

    The first thing that ...

And just like that, the wind has been effectively taken out of The Walking Dead's sails.

That's not to say that The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 7 was a bad installment, but given the quality this season has churned out, I expected much better. "Stradavarius" just wasn't what you would have expected going into the midseason finale. And as a result, it often felt sluggish and unfocused.

Simply put, it just didn't feel up to par with the rest of the season.

The Walking Dead has run into this rut in the past when it's tried to focus on multiple storylines simultaneously, and unfortunately, the pacing of hours like these always take a hit.

While it's safe to say that most of us have lowered our expectations of The Walking Dead over the last few seasons, I believe that's part of the reason why The Walking Dead Season 9 has been so impressive.

So, in what was otherwise an exhilarating first half of the season, one sub-par in...

    Who Are You Now?

    The Whisperers have arrived!

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 6 acted not only as an introduction to a new timeline, fresh characters, and new antagonist, but it also gave us a glimpse into how the series plans to push forward without Rick.

And if "Who Are You Now?" is any indication of what's to come for the remainder of the season and beyond, we're going to be in a for one hell of a ride.

While there were numerous surprises and developments, what was perhaps the most interesting was how Rick's presence was not missed one bit. And that is very telling in and of itself.

In Rick's absence, the rest of the cast has been able to step into the spotlight, and thus actually become relevant again.

Granted, it's only one episode, but the fact that The Walking Dead has found a way to continue telling compelling stories without its star is an extremely promising sign.

The six-year time jump wasn't nearly as jarr...
