Time travel is always a tricky card to play. The Orville Season 2 Episode 13 uses it to set up a finale in a clever-ish way but it's problematic and not necessarily in a good way.

The episode is most obviously a rehash of Star Trek: the Next Generation Season 6 Episode 24 wherein Commander Riker discovers a version of himself created by a transporter accident eight years previously.

Of course, transporters don't exist in the world of The Orville (as I often need to be reminding of) so a time distortion caused by an experimental device and a gravitational wave does the trick here.

The time travel aspect lends itself to a few derivations from the ST:tNG plot since Past Grayson is actually younger than Present Grayson where Riker and his double are the same age, with th...

It's an indicator of the level of confidence MacFarlane and his team have developed in their writing that The Orville Season 2 Episode 12 was able to avoid cliche and the expected conclusion in this Moclan conflict.

Mind you, the diplomatic conclusion we DID get left a lot of issues on the table.

At the level of the Planetary Union, the Moclans are the first dissenters we've met and they are neither appeased nor denied their demands.

Their threat to renounce their membership over the colony of females really drives home the utter misogynistic nature of their culture.

Mercer gets to trot out a lot of righteous indignation over the interplanetary relationship with the Moclans, specifically with their weapons technology.

    Lasting Impressions

If you thought that The Orville Season 2 Episode 11 felt kind of deja-vu-ish, you'd be right. All this has happened before... and that's okay.

At its heart, The Orville is an homage to sci-fi shows and, in the overwhelming majority of cases lately, it does it well so I'm willing to cut it a lot of slack when it chooses to tighten its focus to one or two crew members for an episode.

And Malloy has been stepping up considerably this season, with Scott Grimes really demonstrating some chops in dramatic situations while still wielding his trademark comedic sabre.

Although The Orville Season 2 Episode 10 addresses the question of forgiveness, it wasn't the context many of us expected after the conclusion of The Orville Season 2 Episode 9.

With no discernable fall-out from Isaac's return to the crew, the attention here shifted totally to the question of peace with the Krill.

Mercer asks a really good question of Admiral Perry when he and the Orville are tapped to represent the Planetary Union in the first step towards a peace treaty:

    "Why me?"

Perry's answer -- that Mercer and Malloy's undercover mission on The Orville Season 1 Episode 6 was the most contact any Union officers had ever had with the Krill -- seems rather flimsy.

Also, the idea that being duped by the Krill's double agent, Teley...

Well, they broke Isaac. It's very clear from The Orville Season 2 Episode 9 that his prolonged exposure to biological lifeforms has irrevocably contaminated his programming.

I mean, it's all good considering the Earth and all biological life would've been wiped out if Isaac hadn't made his Hugh of Borg transition.

However, my first thought is that his sympathy/affection for the Finn family is now a vulnerability to be exploited by those looking to control his strength, knowledge, and/or skills.

For allegedly being purely logical in nature, the Kaylons are still victim to some pretty basic fallacies. For instance, based on their treatment at the hands of their Builders, they've painted all biological life forms with the same brush.

    Further...

    Identity, Pt.1

Honestly, none of us should be surprised by The Orville Season 2 Episode 8's reveal.

It was made abundantly clear again and again (sometimes to humorous effect) that Isaac was devoid of emotion and without sentimentality.

But we wouldn't listen and insisted on projecting humanity onto him like Mr. Potato Head accessories.

He was there to observe humans and develop an understanding but nowhere and at no time did he ever express an interest in emulating them.

Even his relationship with Dr. Finn was an amended experiential experiment in role-playing at intimacy.

I wasn't sure how they were going to let their romance play out but I was really having a hard time biting my tongue about how improbable the whole thing was.

We're once again outside the comfort zone with Moclan culture on The Orville Season 2 Episode 7. This time, Keyali gets drawn in, both personally and professionally.

First, though, let's deal with the secondary plot line quickly. We never really thought Grayson and Cassius were going to last, did we?

I'll admit I did wonder for a second if the simulator break-up was actually a practice run for Grayson but then it didn't really matter because it was obvious she was completely over the relationship.

And it seemed a bit sudden. Although she tells Mercer that it had been falling apart over time, we never really saw that.

I'm mildly disappointed that they're moving back towards a Mercer-Grayson hook-up because it was really refreshing to see...

    A Happy Refrain

The masks were literally stripped away on The Orville Season 2 Episode 6 when two of the ship's most alien crew members -- Yaphit and Isaac -- show us their human faces for the first time.

Dr. Finn and Isaac's relationship has been an interesting one ever since The Orville Season 1 Episode 8 when they crash-landed on a planet and Isaac was left to care for Dr. Finn's sons while she tried to escape captivity.

Furthermore, we saw Isaac teaching Ty, the younger son, piano on The Orville Season 2 Episode 1 and he helped Dr. Finn prove the older son, Marcus', innocence when his classmate tried to pin a hacking transgression on him.

All the World Is Birthday Cake

I've come to the conclusion from The Orville Season 2 Episode 5 that the show does best when its A and B storylines are closely aligned.

While the secondary plot here was Commander Grayson and Lt. Commander Bortus' birthdays, it was really more of an element of the First Contact A plotline.

    And that works.

The introduction of Talla Keyali as the new Security Chief, replacing fellow female Xelayan Alara Kitan, was smoothly done and entertaining to boot.

Anyone else get a slightly "Ensign Ro" vibe off of the straight-talking Keyali?

    Totally. Called. It.

It was gratifying -- if a little surprising -- that The Orville Season 2 Episode 4 paid off the bet I made on the introduction of Lt. Tyler on The Orville Season 2 Episode 1.

Surprising only because I kind of expected them to draw it out a little longer with a bigger reveal.

There's a lot of shading in the writing here which seems more thoughtful and complex than the first big encounter with the Krill on The Orville Season 1 Episode 6.

This is probably because Mercer is the mark this time and the charade was carried out aboard the Orville.
