    A Star is Born

Lee Daniels has answered the prayers of every Empire fan who spends that show's winter hiatus missing its weekly doses of music industry drama, family drama, lawbreaking drama...really, there is enough drama on Empire to fill several television series.

So, Daniels has decided to launch another one while the Lyon clan hibernates for the winter.

Star chronicles the rise of its titular heroine, a tough-talking foster kid with an incongruously angelic voice.

On Star Season 1 Episode 1, Star talks her way out of the foster system and into freedom after getting fed up with being treated like an indentured servant instead of part of the family.

Her plan? Track down her sister Simone, also a naturally gifted singer, and her friend Alexandra, an aspiring songwriter she "met" via Instagram, and head to Atlanta.

In Atlanta is her mother's old friend Carlotta – and, Star hopes, a manager willing to give her fledgling girl group a ...

    The Devil You Know

Star continues to fill the campy, music-driven drama void left by Empire this winter on Fox with great aplomb.

Is Star as good of a show as Empire? Hell no. Is it absolutely entertaining in all of its ridiculousness? You better believe it.

On Star Season 1 Episode 2, the secret of Alexandra's parents is revealed to everyone else on the show – and thank goodness, because it was so silly of a secret that there's no way they could have sustained keeping it under wraps for another episode.

On the downside, this episode focused primarily on Alexandra, who is by far my least favorite character. I already thought so after Star Season 1 Episode 1, but this episode confirmed my initial opinion: she's just a spoiled brat.

Maybe Alexandra's right when she accuses Star of talking too much about her unfortunate and impoverished upbringing, but at the same time, Alexandra is not nearly grateful enough for the privileged childhood she had. Read more ››

The last time we saw Simone, she had collapsed from a cocktail of pills (pilfered from Miss Bruce) and booze after singing her heart out in church. Would Star dare to kill off one third of its lead trio after only two episodes?

Of course not, silly. Even Lee Daniels draws the line somewhere.

Simone spent most of Star Season 1 Episode 3 in a hospital bed, under a psychiatric hold as a result of worries that she may have been attempting suicide when she swallowed all of those pills.

I believed Simone when she said she wasn't trying to die. She was just trying to numb the pain of everything she's been through in her life. But, she has to get help, and from someone other than her sister.

Admin: Any history of psychiatric problems?
Carlotta: I don't think so, no.
    Admin: You don't think so?
Carlotta: She's a teenager, they all crazy.

Everyone knows Atlanta boasts one of the American South's biggest music scenes, full of exciting new acts looking to make names for themselves at clubs and festivals. But, did you know that a similar scene also exists for hair?

On Star Season 1 Episode 4, the girls performed at a huge hair show in Atlanta, where Miss Bruce was competing on behalf of Carlotta's salon.

Miss Bruce and the other stylists took turns creating looks onstage in front of a panel of judges to see who would be crowned the winner. I was not aware that live hair-styling with musical accompaniment was a competitive event!

This episode featured a very special guest in the form of Gladys Knight. Gladys appears to be following in the footsteps of Naomi Campbell's Louboutins, at least in regards to Lee Daniels television dramas; both previously guest-starred on Empire before popping up on Star.

In both shows, Gladys was cast as herself, and that's just fine, becaus...

How do you follow an episode where a despicable child molester was mysteriously murdered and no one will admit to being the culprit?

On Star Season 1 Episode 5, not much happened. It's still too soon for the murderer to be revealed, and besides, this show is supposed to be about music, not murder, remember?

Well, I sure did after this episode, which focused primarily on the music. Specifically, the music of Star and Simone's mother, Mary, and the way her voice continues to echo and effect the lives of everyone on the show.

Simone discovered a wonderfully retro old box TV with a VCR and a bunch of old VHS tapes of Mary belting out some beautiful R&B songs. Even in a tiny, fuzzy old tape, her star power illuminates the screen.

It's not even all that. All that's extra. I just want to sing.

Over the course of one episode Star went from being the apple of Jahil's roving, dilated eye to someone he wanted out of the group as quickly as possible. Why the sudden change of heart towards the mirror image of his beloved Mary?

Well, on Star Season 1 Episode 6, Jahil was about to be offed by the traffickers he screwed over. But, Arlene saved the day by paying off his debts in the nick of time.

Arlene wants three things in return for bailing out Jahil. She wants a financial stake in the girl group he is managing, she wants to kick Star out of said group, and she wants Star as far away from her son as possible.

Jahil [on Star's role in the group]: They've got a performance tomorrow night.
Arlene: Good. Make it be her last. No, make her want it to be her last.

    Black Wherever I Go

One day after what would have been Sandra Bland's 30th birthday, Star devoted an episode to honoring another black woman who died at the hands of police after a supposed routine traffic stop.

While the woman at the center of this show, salon employee Danielle Jackson, might be fictional, her story is all too real. Like Sandra Bland and so many others before her, Danielle was needlessly cut down before her time.

And like those other men and women, Danielle's tragic death becomes a rallying cry for the black community, especially when it appears that those responsible for her death will go unpunished.

Whatever you may think about movements like Black Lives Matter, you cannot deny that Star Season 1 Episode 7 was a powerful and timely reminder that amidst all of the other issues currently populating the news, racial tension remains at the forefront of American culture.

After Danielle's emotionally wrenching funeral, Derek decided to ...

The latest installment of the Star saga was an ideal example of the show's split personality.

It was part political statement against police brutality and the system's bias against black men, part sexy and suspenseful soap opera, and all insanity.

On Star Season 1 Episode 8, Alex was released from jail thanks to the intervention of her mother, Rose, who showed up to pay her bail and chew her out. Derek wasn't so lucky, though.

Despite Derek's lack of a prior criminal record, and the fact that, you know, he was innocent of any crime, his bail was set at a seemingly insurmountable $250,000.

As Miss Bruce points out, they only need to raise ten percent of that amount for the bail bondsman. But where to get $25,000?

Do you think Destiny's Child ever went through something like this?

Star might have forced Jahil's hand and made him choose her over Eva when it came to Big Trouble, but it turns out, that decision only led to even more trouble for the embattled group.

On Star Season 1 Episode 10, the girls learned that because Jahil signed them up for the next round of the Atlanta Next Fest competition as a foursome, they cannot go ahead and perform unless they find a fourth girl to join them.

So, they have little choice but to approach the girl that Jahil wanted to be their fourth in the first place, much to Star's chagrin: Eva.

Star is so desperate to make it to the next round of the competition that she reluctantly agrees to accept Eva into the group, as long as Eva doesn't attempt to have any creative control or input into Big Trouble.

However, this is easier said than done, as Eva is possibly an even more wily woman than Star.

Oh, here comes that little Latin girl that don't do...

How do you think the percentage of condoms that break in real life compares to the percentage of condoms that break on television?

It seems as though every single time a character on television finds out she's pregnant, it's because a condom broke.

I know condoms aren't foolproof, but it feels like if condoms broke in real life as often as they do on television, the condom industry would have gone out of business back in the Eighties.

I assume this is because television producers don't want to portray irresponsible, unprotected sex as something common and everyday. They want the characters to appear to have made smart life choices, but they also want the drama that a surprise baby brings.

So, they blame the condoms and call it a day.

Why did I just go on a seemingly unprovoked rant about the fragility of fictional condoms? Well, on Star Season 1 Episode 11, Alex became the latest victim of this quintessential plot devi...
