The NCIS's New Orleans field office investigates criminal cases affecting military personnel in The Big Easy, a city known for its music, entertainment and decadence. Leading the team is Special Agent Dwayne 'King' Pride, a native of New Orleans who is driven by his need to do what is right. Working with him is Special Agent Christopher LaSalle, who plays hard but works harder; more
... and Special Agent Meredith 'Merri' Brody, a charismatic and tough interrogator who transferred from the Great Lakes office in search of a fresh start. Supporting them is coroner, Dr. Loretta Wade, who is as eccentric as she is smart. This colorful city that harbors a dark side is a magnet for service personnel on leave, and when overindulgence is followed by trouble, Pride's team is at its best.

New Orleans Season 5 Finale Review

Finally, a happy ending for Pride.

He was beaten and drugged within an inch of his life on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 24.

But he actually came out the other side, decidedly the worse for wear.

The celebration at his bar echoed the ending on NCIS: New Orleans Season 4 Episode 24, when he went up to his apartment only to have three bullets pumped into him by Parsons.

This time around, fortunately, he just got the joy.

That isn't to say that Dwayne hadn't been through a hard few days.

The action picked right up after his capture by Apollyon at the end of NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 23.

Pride was being pumped full of mind-altering drugs by Walker's best pharmacologist so he could probe to find out what information about Apollyon that Dwayne had.

You can never go wrong with having a small local law-enforcement team invade a foreign country with which it's largely unfamiliar to accomplish a near-impossible goal.

No wonder Pride and company didn't complete their mission on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 23.

The good news is that since this clash-with-Apollyon storyline is already going to be two parts, maybe it won't spill over into next season.

    Maybe.

I mean, Dwayne was in peril at the end of last season. To have another cliffhanger with a similar storyline would be so redundant.

Kind of like having a local team in over its head in a foreign country, where they don't speak the language (sorry, Chris) or know the players.

That tired trope never gets old.

A contact of Hannah's estranged husband Ryan came up with actionable intel on Apollyon, as first mentioned on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 21.

The effort to turn Sebastian into a three-dimensional character from a weird geek continues apace.

Sebastian struggled to impose order on chaos on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 22.

Let's give credit to the powers that be for bringing a former supporting character more often to the forefront.

Hell, Sebastian has been front and center even more than LaSalle this season, which means that LaSalle has been underused.

Ah, well, when a new character (Hannah)  is introduced, another loses screen time. Basic math, I'm afraid.

I guess it has been just Christopher's turn. Hopefully he'll come back strong in NCIS: New Orleans Season 6.

Finally, Gregorio got another turn in the spotlight.

A conman tied to a fatal hit-and-run pressed all of Tammy's buttons on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 21.

Since her conman ex-husband ruined her first life in New Orleans, she's particularly sensitive toward such felons.

So pursuing such a suspect naturally made her even a little more reckless than usual. Not Pride reckless, mind you, but close.

Fortunately, Dylan Samuels (his current identity) was so full of himself that he made for a despicable target. The team just had to get ahead of him, which definitely took some time to accomplish.

It must have been so much easier for conmen trying to rip off women before the internet existed.

Sometimes your basic standalone episode hits the spot and sometimes it doesn't

Elvis Bertrand returned on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 20.

How you felt about this episode had to start with how you feel about Elvis, a semi-reformed hacker that Pride had befriended and helped out of a jam.

How you feel about Elvis has to start with how you feel about Tom Arnold, the actor playing Elvis. People tend to love or hate Arnold.

He's no longer married to Roseanne Barr, so points for that.

Still, he said a lot of objectionable stuff during that time which people hold against him until this day.

I've got no problem with Arnold nor Elvis. We've all made mistakes and said stupid things. Move on.

Elvis is a grade-A scenery chewer and trouble does tend to follow him.<...

Fitzgerald got credited with saying that the rich are different than you and me.

That doesn't necessarily mean better, as was proven on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 19.

And surprisingly, Sebastian got to be the guide for the team while they investigated the death of a Navy lieutenant from a wealthy family.

Who woulda thunk that our favorite lab rat went to a bougie prep school and could be the snob whisperer for the squad as they tried to determine whether Wyatt died of natural causes?

I was more on Gregorio's side as she got more and more pissed off at the attitudes of the rich witnesses, all of whom seemed put out having to answer questions during an investigation following Wyatt's fall down the steps.

We got to find out more about Patton this episode.

Patton took a rare turn in the spotlight on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 18.

Good thing, too, because it involved differently abled people and computer stuff, so Patton was right in his element.

The first interesting development is that Pride was back to being Special Agent in Charge after being detached on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 17 so that he could join the top-secret Apollyon task force.

Apparently, it wasn't all that top-secret since some people above Pride in the food chain had to know in order to find a substitute SAC so that he could try out Isler's task force for himself.

    Wrong move, Dwayne.

Pride was offered a tantalizing new career path but decided against it on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 17.

The fate of the top-secret terrorist group Apollyon, last seen on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 11, was definitely left hanging while the series pivoted to exploring Hannah's secret past.

What happened to Walker, and was he the brains behind that group? Well, the mystery of Apollyon resumed this episode, kind of.

Actually, a bigger mystery was why it took so long to kick Pride out of his Special Agent in Charge desk job. He hated bureaucracy and viewers never saw him do that job, so he really shouldn't have been surprised when someone had taken over for him one morning.

Well, Hannah has one less problem now.

She put her boogeyman Zelko out of her misery on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 16.

And next the hard work begins: rebuilding the family that Hannah has been keeping at arms' length.

Finally, most of Hannah's back story that had been hinted at throughout the season was shown. And yes, she made the right choices all along to keep her family safe.

The only mistake was letting VIctor Zelko escape in Yemen, to come back to haunt her and everyone else involved in that mission.

I didn't even recognize Liam, Hannah's old partner, who was being tortured by Zelko in the opening scene.

Granted, he was in pretty rough shape, not looking at all like he did when he came to warn Hannah on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 14 about how Zelko and his family were killed in Yemen.

New Orleans Season 5 Episode 15 Review

Finally, the storyline involving Hannah's overseas ops began to get rolling.

It actually even intertwined with the case of the week on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 15.

    How's that for synchronicity?

I thought the storyline featuring Hannah's old CIA partner Liam on NCIS: New Orleans Season 5 Episode 14 seemed to just peter out, a real Peggy Lee moment.

There had to be more. And sure nuff there was in this episode.

Poor Hannah. That one mission in Yemen has come back to haunt her big time.

First, she sent away husband Ryan and daughter Naomi to keep them safe.

Then Liam tells her that Victor Zelko, the terrorist they had been pursuing, and his family all had been killed during a secret American raid in which she had participated.

    Now that s...
