When Creeley tells Bessie his desires regarding his brother are complicated, I get the feeling even he doesn't know how complicated things will become at the end of this tale.

Virtually everything regarding the strike is on the back burner during Damnation Season 1 Episode 5 while personal relationships and motives are highlighted.

There were a couple of times when the action tried to throw us off the path, but the most shocking events came by was of personal reveals.

Right up front, we discovered Hyde, PhD hasn't been pleased with the work Creeley has been doing on his behalf.

For proof the strike wasn't of importance, Hyde didn't even bother firing Creeley, but instead hired a second contractor to outright kill the preacher and his wife.

That was more than a little confusing to me. Hyde pulled Creeley out of a Wyoming jail to do a job, a job he's not doing satisfactorily. But as far as we know, it's never been Creel...

The story between the brothers is deepening a bit.

We learned some of the backstory between Creeley and Seth on Damnation Season 1 Episode 4, and it was rather fascinating. That discovery came with another, though. Seth has some catching up to do when it comes to his little brother, as he's not the man he once knew.

There might not be a lot of time to do that since Seth's life is in a bit of danger now that Connie has a solid lead on the biggest bad man she knows.

    That is one terrifying woman.

But I suppose she is not more or less terrifying than anyone else on the show. They're all using people and wantonly killing if necessary to obtain their objectives.

There is just something profoundly chilling about pulling around one of her victim's children as her own and using her as bait to get the information she needs to rip families apart.

You have to hope nobody ever solves the murder of poor ol' Mr. Donahue if ...

As a tiny cross-section of America fights for their survival on Damnation Season 1 Episode 3, the hindsight we have now doesn't even make their decisions any easier.

It's interesting how even during what will be titled the Great Depression (not that they know that), people cannot open their eyes wide enough to see what is happening all around them.

Maybe the town of Holden is too isolated to feel the full pain of what the country as a whole is suffering.

What I know of the depression years features a practical hell on earth, especially when it coming to farming communities. Yet the local bank is still in business, people are still eating well (even while not selling their goods), the whorehouse is doing great business, and the Sheriff sees fit to let the town "fix itself."

I have to wonder why Seth and Amelia picked Holden as an ideal place to ruffle feathers and why Creeley was shipped in to break the strikes.

    Maybe we...

    Which Side Are You On?

When it seems like the world is falling apart around you, it's hard to know who to trust.

On Damnation Season 1 Episode 2, aptly titled "Which Side Are You On," revealed a bit of what's been going on in town and how much the players know about it.

    Hint: Not much.

While everyone is reasonably eager to do something about the situation, it's surprising how little anyone knows about what's happening in their town.

Bessie discovered early on through Creeley's letter that his "employer" is trying to stop the infiltration of foreign enemies into America under the guise of organized labor. In other words, Martin Eggers Hyde, PhD has been telling Creeley he's trying to stop the spread of Communism to the United States.

An intelligent person should see right through that horse pucky, and given what Bessie did next, I feel assured she has no problem doing just that.

Whether her father, the Sheriff (I told you his...
