Based on the acclaimed Joseph Heller novel, Catch-22 follows the adventures and misadventures of a US air squadron in Italy in World War II. Yossarian, a bombardier, whose frantic obsession every time he goes up on a mission is “to come down alive”. His odds of success at such a simple aim keep getting worse because Colonel Cathcart keeps raising the number of missions the men more
...have to fly. More than the retreating Germans, the real enemy for Yossarian and his rag-tag bunch of friends is the bureaucracy of the military, inverting logic at every turn. The pinnacle of this is Catch-22, a military by-law which states that if you fly your missions, you’re crazy, and don’t have to fly them; all you have to do is ask. But if you ask not to, then you’re sane, and so you have to fly them.

Grant Heslov on Making Hulu's 'Catch-22' With George Clooney

Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22” has a troubled Hollywood history. Mike Nichols’ 1970 feature film adaptation was a widely panned flop. Three years later, Richard Dreyfus starred in a busted CBS pilot based on the book. But with their new limited series premiering Friday on Hulu, producing partners George Clooney and Grant Heslov attempt to succeed where others came up short — unpacking over six hours Heller’s story of Yossarian, a World War II bombardier who tries relentlessly to get himself taken off combat duty by having himself... more

'Catch-22' Review: George Clooney Delivers an Absurd, Frustrating Satire for Absurd, Frustrating Times

“Catch-22” is, thankfully, not solely about war. What George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s new limited series has to say about soldiers dying for their country isn’t as revolutionary as Joseph Heller’s words were when first published in 1961, even if Hulu’s six-part TV adaptation blends his divergent storytelling into one, largely chronological experience. Scripts by Luke Davies and David Michôd do a fine job capturing the absurdity inherent to young men in the prime of their... more

How George Clooney and Christopher Abbott Battled to Bring 'Catch-22' Into the 21st Century

When Christopher Abbott walked into the audition room to read for the lead role in “Catch-22,” George Clooney greeted him wearing a leather helmet. “I took a breath a little bit,” Abbott says. “I wasn’t as nervous. I was like, ‘All right, we can play.’” The icebreaker worked. Abbott landed the role of Capt. John Yossarian, the bombardier antihero of Joseph Heller’s novel “Catch-22,” who spends the entirety of the story trying his damnedest to get out of World War II. The hel... more
