Series Finale Do Castle and Beckett Make It Out Alive?

After eight seasons, three wives and countless poorly executed plot twists, Castle is finally over. There will be no Beckett-less ninth season, no sequel to Martha's bestseller. What we do get in this series finale, titled "Crossfire," is the conclusion of one of the show's biggest mysteries, an actual moment of interaction between Beckett and Lanie, and one of the single strangest endings to a television series that I have ever witnessed. On this show, though, what else could we expect?

    Another Shot at Locksat

As you may recall, the mysterious Locksat has been tormenting our heroes all season on Castle. He's bigger than previous Big Bad Bracken and is in fact so powerful that the concept of him alone is enough to cause contrived breakups. Recently, though, Competent Public Defender Caleb Brown revealed himself to have a good heart and sacrificed his personal safety to give Beckett a lead on his mysterious boss. The lead was a GPS-programmed ce...

    The Antichrist Comes to Town

So Hayley and Alexis are gay for each other, right? Because I don't know how many different ways there are to interpret the situation anymore. In the immortal words of Orange is the New Black's Pennsatucky, "They lesbian-ing together." Exhibit A: This episode, "Hell to Pay," opens with Hayley and Alexis having a cocktail-dresses-and-scotch party in Castle's PI office, in the middle of a blackout. The mood is somewhat broken when an ax-wielding man breaks in and promptly drops dead. Later, after everything has been resolved, Alexis utters the phrase, "If I can't sleep tonight, I'm kicking your ass in the morning." Come on, what am I supposed to do with that, Castle? You've only got one episode left before you are officially dead to me, so you might as well go full-gay.

    A Crossover Waiting to Happen

But about that ax-wielding dead guy, his name was Gabriel Shaw, and he recently escaped from the local mental hospital for the criminally insane....

Was Halloween moved from October to May and no one told me?

Because Castle Season 8 Episode 21 really felt like it should have been the Halloween episode this season. Alas, it’s only May, and this horror-inspired installment fell victim to bad timing and a lack of heart.

The overall premise wasn’t necessarily bad, although I know very little about the antichrist, and I have no doubt that those who do can probably poke holes in the details.

There were certainly moments of suspense. The first of which was the ax wielding psycho breaking into Castle’s office.

Was anyone else hoping he might take out Alexis and/or Hayley? I mean, if it’s probable that we’ll lose Beckett next week, I figure I can at least dream about Alexis and Hayley getting axed too, so to speak.

Okay, that’s evil, but evil was the point of the hour.

    One of my favorite moment...

Castle Befriends a Drug Lord Previously on Castle, Caleb Brown (Competent Public Defender) made a suicidal move to help Castle and Beckett get closer to Locksat. His appraisal of Beckett's own suicidal tendencies also became all the more poignant in light of Stana Katic's upcoming exit. But you don't actually need to know that because exactly none of it is mentioned in this episode. Instead, we get Ryan's kid dressed as a flower. To be fair, she's a delightful and adorable flower. But there are only so many episodes left in this season, people! This is not the time for dancing plants!

    Teach Me Your Ways, Martha

"Much Ado About Murder" opens with a man, Zane Cannon, butchering Hamlet's signature monologue. Someone, perhaps Shakespeare's scandalized ghost, stops the performance by stabbing Zane to death with a quill pen. The police arrive hours later to investigate, accompanied by a "stalkerazzi" taking pictures of Zane's body. Sadly, no wayward pens put a stop to this.

    Theatre was ...

You only live once, so fans of Caskett need to hold on to every moment we have left, starting with Castle Season 8 Episode 20.

What’s sad is that this hour was one of the more enjoyable of Castle Season 8 and had a lot of what I had hoped to see if the series continued.

For those of you who haven’t heard the Castle casting news, ABC has yet to renew Castle for another season, but they have confirmed that if they do, characters Kate Beckett and Lanie Parish will not be returning.

It really does give even an installment like “Much Ado About Murder” a sense of melancholy which is a shame because it actually was fun.

The case of the week had just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.

I loved when both Castle and Ryan slipped into Shakespeare speak when trying to question Ophelia…I mean Naomi. I almost didn’t want Javi to stop it and yet knew it was complete...

Castle Finds a Superhero and Beckett Finds an Ally

Watching Castle is a different experience now that we know Stana Katic has not been asked to return for a possible 9th season. With every plot point, there is the question of how it will affect Beckett's exit. Will she survive the inevitable Locksat confrontation? Will she take off on a solo motorcycle trip across the country? We don't get any answers to these questions in this episode, "Dead Again," but we do get some forward motion in the case that has been driving Beckett all season.

    His Secret: Being Male

The victim of the week is Alan Masters, a by-the-book safety inspector who takes a lot of vitamins and enjoys the adventure channel. He's poisoned when someone tampers with his water filter. But lo! After Lanie pronounces him well and truly dead, Alan pops back up again like nothing happened. Lanie has a professional crisis and doctors are at a loss as to how Alan made such a miraculous recovery. Perhaps they are not aware of the common genet...

    Dead Again

It was hard to enjoy watching Castle Season 8 Episode 19 knowing that (SPOILER ALERT) certain cast members are about to be written out at the end of the season.

As Caleb pointed out, it felt like they were marching towards the kill zone.

But there was a bright spot in “Dead Zone” and that was guest star Jonathan Silverman who played safety inspector Alan Masters.

Instead of the team at the 12th Precinct investigating a homicide, they were trying to stop Alan from being killed, which happened again and again and again.

The first couple of times were intriguing, and Lanie’s reactions were realistic yet comical. Kudos to Tamala Jones for reminding Castle fans how awesome Lanie can be when we’ve seen so little of her in Castle Season 8.

The one downside was actually Castle himself. Yes, Rick has always enjoyed his crazy theories with childlike glee, and in smaller ...

A Terror Attack Puts Hayley in Jeopardy

Previously on Castle, Hayley was introduced, given a shifty backstory and developed an Oprah-and-Gayle type of friendship with Alexis. This episode, "Backstabber," sees her reconnect with said shifty routes; she goes on a mission for her former MI6 commander, Bryce Roberts. Bryce is now a freelance security contractor, so the job is installing spyware into a man's office computer to see if he's cheating. Still, she's partnered with a truly scummy guy named Marcus, so the personal difficulty is probably on par with counter-terrorism.

A Very Particular Set of Skills

Hayley and Marcus break into Manchester Energy, an energy corporation that services the UK. They're joined by a hapless employee, who sneaks into the office trying to impress a woman way out of his league. Hayley leaves before things get X-rated, but Marcus opts to stay behind. Not a good move.

The next day, Hayley is single-handedly saving Castle's neglected PI business when she o...

    Backstabber

I’m willing to admit that the Major Castle Spoiler that was revealed earlier today may have tainted my feelings on the aptly named “Backstabber.”

Still, I don’t believe I would have liked Castle Season 8 Episode 18 even without that news.

I’ve made no secret that I’m not a fan of Hayley, although I will admit that character has grown on me a bit throughout the year. My problem is that Hayley went from being no one to suddenly being portrayed as someone we should consider family, and I just don’t buy it.

Alexis has become so close to Hayley in such a short period of time. Fans begged for this kind of relationship to occur between Alexis and Kate, but even with Castle and Beckett marrying, it never happened. Alexis' sudden and intense love for Hayley is a poor substitute.

Then there was the behavior of the Captain and detectives of the 12th precinct during this case.
