    ZIP Ties

After incredibly short incarcerations and death, the Blindspot team is barreling toward the finish line.

The final fates of Madeline and Weitz were decided on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 9 and Blindspot Season 5 Episode 10.

But Ivy and the ZIP are still on the loose as we get to wait two weeks for the series finale.

Why two weeks? Good question. One that should be directed to NBC programmers.

Next Thursday, NBC is airing a 30 Rock upfront special at 8, following by reruns of Superstore and Brooklyn 99 at 9. (Yes, I still call them reruns. Calling a rerun an encore is putting lipstick on a pig.)

So Blindspot's shortened fifth season gets broken up for a second time, so NBC can promote its fall schedule, which is still weeks away, a week earlier.

That makes as much sense as many NBC programming choices.

See? My rant broke up this review just like NBC is breaking up Blindspot Season 5.

That can't be it for Patterson, can it?

The brains of the fugitive FBI agents appeared to have been killed on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 8.

But seriously, if TPTB were going to kill off one more agent, wouldn't it have been RIch Dotcom?

And besides, Keaton got gunned down this episode after betraying Zapata under duress, so that's a high enough body count, right?

So let's save the eulogy for Patterson for now and see if she arises from the thermite ashes.

After all, Archie Bunker has all kinds of hidey-holes. Who's to say there wasn't one in the server room as well?

It was a bit disappointing to discover that the group sending secret tattoo messages to the Blindspot renegades was only a trio.

That can't be it, can it?

Even if that is all, Boston is still hiding off the grid somewhere and he's as talented as Rich and Patterson, so there's hope.

The wheels came off in a hu...

    Awl In

This episode was a story about parents and their children.

The fugitives found themselves stretched thin as they attempted to eliminate ZIP, the memory-wiping chemical that Madeline had promised to Ivy, on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 7.

At least one ally of the team was holding tough.

Ivy located Allison, but fortunately not Bethany, and turned her over to Madeline, as a show of good faith in Ivy's effort to recapture the renegade FBI agents.

Ivy was smug because she got Weller to admit that Bethany was hospitalized while he was drugged on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 5.

But by then, Allie had relocated Bethany to a safe place where Ivy or Madeline was never going to find her.

So Allie stonewalled Madeline, claiming ignorance as to where the fugitives were hiding out. Chances were good that that's the truth, so that she could pass a polygraph if necessary.

But, hoping to humor Madeline enough t...

Finally, an episode that's a breather for viewers.

The fugitives end up running across Europe, attempting to locate the missing Gardner paintings on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 6.

Fortunately, Ice Cream proved to be a pussy cat.

He tried to pull off being menacing, but once team members confronted with how badly he had protected them in Iceland, he changed his tune.

He was willing to trade a back door to a network that Madeline frequented in exchange for the Gardner paintings, which he had promised to a scary Russian hitman.

Here's hoping that finding some dirt of Madeline was worth the insanity which the squad had to go through.

The theft of 13 works of art from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum in 1990 has ended up a storyline on many TV series since then, to the point that "the Gardner paintings" has become shorthand.

Even on Blindspot itself, back on Blindspot Season 1 Episode 18, ...

    That was remarkably quick.

Weller escaped, and Jane received amateur surgery during Blindspot Season 5 Episode 5.

So by the end, the team was together again and back in the fight against Madeline.

After, you know, they take care of their payment to Ice Cream.

That's only fair since he did save their asses (except for Reade) back in Iceland on Blindspot Season 4 Episode 22.

They just can't catch a break while on the run, can they?

Rich went out to find blood for Jane only to have that guy turn over their location to Ice Cream.

It's the final season of Blindspot, so maybe that's why these two storylines got wrapped up so promptly.

As the episode title suggests, this was all about head games.

Ivy tried to bullshit Kurt at first, planting the seeds about Jane's gunshot and Bethany's predicament, attempting to get him to trade the rest of his teammates for those two people he...

    And My Axe!

It was a very Tasha-centric episode.

It was revealed that the chemical weapon at the center of Madeline's plans has a tie to Zapata on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 4.

The problem is that particular weapon was checked into evidence nearly a decade ago and Tasha was having trouble remembering much about it.

That's because it came into FBI possession on a very special day: when she and Reade started at the bureau.

So all that Zapata could recall was Reade and the beginning of their work life together.

Which wasn't much help when it came to learning more about the weapon.

Although it seems a little early in the final season, at least TPTB found an organic way to have Reade appear one more time, through that time-honored mechanism: the flashback.

Those trips back to 2011 allowed fans to experience their relationship from its origin, as they fought their attraction to each other in favor of a profess...

Weller and company have got to put together the pieces faster before they all crack up.

The stress of being on the run was getting to them all on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 3, except maybe Rich.

And if Rich is the most stable member of a team, that squad is in big trouble.

They certainly can't wait for Weitz to save them.

He's showing no sign of growing a spine, and Madeline got even further inside his head in this episode.

It kinds of makes you wonder why she needed all those mercenaries she brought in.

At headquarters, she's up against plucky computer whiz Afreen and maybe the weaselly Weitz, whose loyalty seems to shift in the wind.

Ivy Sands and her mercenaries are supposed to be hunting down the team. But why bother, since the squad seemed determined to come to them, or at least the gang with whom Madeline had aligned.

Of course, the idea is for Weller's team to determine Mad...

Any excuse to feature Bill Nye, Action Hero, is a good one.

We even finally learned Patterson's first name on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 2.

Having The Science Guy as Patterson's father has always been an inspired idea, ever since he was introduced back on Blindspot Season 3 Episode 20.

Nye's appearance marks the second recurring character to return in this final season, following Shohid Ahktar on Blindspot Season 5 Episode 1.

As a beloved international icon, let's hope Bill avoids Shoh's final fate on this episode, as Madeline sent a message to the fugitives.

The most important development on Patterson's personal front is that her first name is William, named after her father. It's understandable that she's gone by her last name all this time.

Now, if only we could learn what her space-camp name was. I suspect that nugget will never be unearthed by series' end.

Nye's entry into the narrative ...

    Fix My Present Havoc

On Blindspot Season 3 Episode 7 our favorite team rallies together to solve the tattoo that got Stuart killed and we find out just how dark and twisted Hirst really is.

If confirmation that Hirst was dirty caught you by surprise on Blindpsot Season 3 Episode 6, you were in for a rude awakening this hour.

It's certainly within the realm of believability that a director of the FBI could be prone to manipulation and blackmail, but the ease with which Hirst turned to violence was shocking: slitting Stuart's throat without the blink of an eye.

This flashback of the murder was startling to me -- the fact that Hirst would use her own hand to do her dirty work proved how far gone she is. Zero sympathy. Sociopathic.

Even with this knowledge it almost struck me as more evil the way she tried manipulate Reade, poking at his biggest vulnerability, and trying to pry him away from Zapata.

Hirst: I think Zapata found h...

    Adoring Suspect

On Blindspot Season 3 Episode 6 the team takes down a major weapons trafficker and terrorist mastermind with the help of a local movie star and his biggest fangirl: Rich Dotcom.

Episodes of Blindspot that feature the charismatic buffoon Rich Dotcom are my absolute favorite. Whenever he's on screen, you can be sure that there's going to be some quality one-liners and huge comic relief.

This hour was particularly fun as the team had to enter the world of Hollywood movie-making in order to solve their tattoo case. Besides being extremely meta to watch and ironic to see our favorite actors claim they weren't made for the big screen, it was also exciting to watch them run around a set.

Between a dirty movie producer named "Booky," lots of undercover work, and everyone constantly mistaking fake props for real weapons, it was a lot of fun and games.

Rich was particularly helpful this go-round, even in the field. He managed care for...
