The series centers on 17-year-old Josh "J" Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody and her right-hand Baz, who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Crai more
...g, the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran, the troubled, suspicious "baby" of the family. Also prominent are Nicky, J's steady girlfriend, and Catherine, Baz's de facto wife and the mother of their 3-year-old daughter, Lena. It isn't long before Josh is pulled into the family's life of indulgence and excess, but he soon discovers that it's all being funded by criminal activities. Joining the family comes with more danger and excitement than he might be ready to handle.

Wow. J. You just blew my mind.

It was a long time coming, and I can't say I'm sad, but J stepped up his game on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 8 when he took care of business in the worst way possible.

Goodbye, Mia. It was nice knowing you.

J blowing away Mia was shocking. But, and I'm not ashamed to say this, I cheered when he did.

Did anyone else think he didn't have it in him?

I sure didn't. But he did. At least it appears that he did.

He freaked out afterward, so let's go with it and not the possibility that he spared Mia in some way and tricked Pete.

And if he could kill Mia, he won't have any problems killing anyone else who pisses him off or gets in his way.

The strange thing about J, though, is that he's constantly going back and forth about h...

    Know Thy Enemy

It's getting a whole helluva lot more interesting in the Codys' world.

Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 7 was about a lot of things, but what struck me most was the baby situation -- both Renn's and young Smurf's.

You can all say what you want, but young Smurf is pregnant.

And I don't even know why that excites me, but it does. Maybe it's because I love the relationship between Colin and Smurf so much.

The guy truly cares about her. And even though she won't admit it, she cares about him too.

And the fact that she was vomiting in the toilet at the end of the hour confirms she's pregnant.

    She's not sick. She's carrying Colin's twins.

    Into The Black

    Well, damn, Janine Cody.

Smurf let all hell fly loose on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 6 not only in the current day but also in the flashbacks.

I don't know if it was the woman who was driving her nuts or just the idea that she had to go through chemo that set her off, but she wasn't having any of it.

It could be the woman's incessant talking about kids and grandkids was what sent her over the edge.

She might not show it, but she has to have some regrets about the way she raised her kids. And also about what she did to Lena.

After all she's been through in her life, she probably thinks she deserves a better way to die, and she's right.

    Reap

You reap what you sow, and the Codys are reaping a whole lot of peril.

The liklihood of the Codys surviving was knocked down a few notches on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 5.

Between Frankie's deceit, Angela's manipulations, Adrian's betrayal, and Smurf's sickness, things aren't looking good for the Oceanside, California crime family.

Pope needs to get his head straight.

He was definitely shocked to learn that Smurf had cancer, but his statement to her later about how he doesn't care if she dies, is Pope trying to deal with the inevitablity of his mother's death.

He doesn't know how to deal with the news.

Animal Kingdom: Ben Robson Talks Frankie's Deceit, Renn's Return, and Why Family is Everything

The fact that Smurf continues to manipulate him isn't shocking, but she may have realized she went to far.

What he said to her hurt her....

The women of Animal Kingdom ruled the day on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 4, but nothing that happened with any of them was any good.

Smurf is down for the count. Renn is back. Frankie might be trouble after all.

Mia is a nightmare. And Angela? She's just a nosy and annoying biatch.

    Let's talk about Smurf first.

Smurf is in bad shape -- both physically and mentally.

At this point, we don't know if Smurf is dead or alive, but the future doesn't look bright for our favorite criminal matriarch.

She's trying to reconnect with her boys, but it may be too late.

She knows that they all probably hate her, but she's going to try her best to be a better mother until the end comes.

    Man vs. Rock

    Craig is the man.

Craig finally came into his own on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 3 when Frankie challenged him to figure out a way to steal the sculpture.

There was a time when Craig was nothing more than a momma's boy., but he's finally pulled away from Smurf and that can be attributed to Frankie.

I'm not necessarily a fan of Frankie, but she has been able to bring something out in Craig  that wasn't there before: confidence.

If you remember back on Animal Kingdom Season 3, once she got together with him, she told him he didn't have to live under Smurf's thumb forever.

That is one of the reasons she included him in that sophisticated house heist -- besides the fact she needs a good looking partner to help her pull it off.

If she didn't see potential in him, she wouldn't have included him in that job or the current job they are working on together.

    Danger! Danger!

Angela, Mia, and Frankie may have different goals in mind, but they're all about to cause Smurf some major headaches.

It's a problem Smurf doesn't need at the moment especially when she might have a serious medical issue which caused her to pass out at the end of Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 2.

Whatever is wrong with Smurf, you can be sure Angela will take full advantage of every moment she spends with Pope.

And considering Pope is at a dangerously vulnerable point in his life, it could spell doom for the Cody family.

Angela seems like another Frankie, only a little more dirty.

It makes sense she would visit the Cody home after not being able to find Julia, but for her to defy Smurf's orders to stay away shows that her intentions are anything but honorable.

Pope is on a suicide mission.

There was a possibility that Pope had every intention of doing in Smurf, but by the end of Animal Kingdom Season 3 Episode 12 there was a strong indication that the suicide kit he bought was for himself.

It's a lot less messy than a gun.

Pope only wanted the best for Lena, and when he couldn't be the one to provide it for her, he did what he thought would be in her best interests. He knew what it was like being raised by Smurf and knew that it was the worst thing that could happen to his niece.

It didn't matter that he'd be an integral part of Lena's life again. He didn't want Lena to be as messed up as the rest of them under Smurf's manipulative, watchful eye.

Can we all breathe a sigh of relief?

Shawn Hatosy made his directorial debut with Animal Kingdom Season 3 Episode 11 and delivered the series' best and most intense episode to date.

My mind is still blown -- but at least I'm breathing again.

"Jackpot" could have been Pope's swan song, but lucky for us, Lucy has a heart, and Pope is still alive.

The only logical reason she didn't put a bullet in his head was that she loved Baz, and Baz loved Pope -- and the fact that she's not crazy like Smurf.

But I have to wonder if she would have known Pope killed Catherine, would she have been so generous?

    Mama Smurf reigns again.

It didn't take long for Smurf to get her boys all lined up in a row on Animal Kingdom Season 3 Episode 10 even if she did have a little bit of help from DCFS and Billy.

Craig never got out of line; Pope tried it for a while but turned to mush because of Lena's situation, and even Deran's plan of breaking away got derailed.

The only one who still seems to have a chance is J. Surprisingly.

Deran thought he had it all figured out, and he did -- until he let Billy get in his head. Smurf might not have had anything to do with the blossoming relationship between Billy and Deran, but she definitely had everything to do with its ultimate destruction.

She knew exactly how to play Billy, and she used him to get Deran back in line. But it's not all Smurf's fault. Deran is smart enough to know that Billy couldn't be trusted, but his desire to have a relationship with someone other than Smurf was his downfa...
