The series centers on 17-year-old Josh "J" Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody and her right-hand Baz, who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Crai more
...g, the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran, the troubled, suspicious "baby" of the family. Also prominent are Nicky, J's steady girlfriend, and Catherine, Baz's de facto wife and the mother of their 3-year-old daughter, Lena. It isn't long before Josh is pulled into the family's life of indulgence and excess, but he soon discovers that it's all being funded by criminal activities. Joining the family comes with more danger and excitement than he might be ready to handle.

What just happened? My mind is blown. That's what happened.

As expected, Smurf made her last stand at Jed's farm on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 12, but how it all went down was completely shocking.

    Smurf is one crafty lady!

While I fully believe she expected to die at the hands of Jed and his sons, she quickly came up with a Plan B when Pope saved her.

Her screaming diatribe at the boys was jaw-dropping. I seriously couldn't believe what she was doing.

She knew Pope wasn't going to kill her, and she had no intention of killing Pope. Shooting him was just a warning to let them all know she was serious.

And she knew that J would handle business, and he did.

She put Pope in a position to make it look like J saved him from cer...

My heart broke into a million pieces. And I cried.

I blame Shawn Hatosy (who directed this episode) and the Animal Kingdom writers for that.

But I mostly blame Leila George and Grant Harvey for bringing so much chemistry and life to their portrayals of young Smurf and Colin that I couldn't help but fall in love with the couple.

Smurf and Colin should have lasted forever.

As soon as Manny walked through the kitchen doors on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 11, I knew we were being set up for something bad.

And we knew Colin's death was inevitible. But, damn, I wish it wasn't so.

You have to wonder if Smurf is carrying around loads of guilt for her part in Colin's death.

If she hadn't tried to get the boys back together, there wou...

    Exit Strategy

Secrets were the name of the game on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 10.

But like many secrets, they don't stay secret for long.

Smurf learned the biggest secret of all, but we all knew she would eventually.

Deran seemed a bit stunned when Smurf dropped the bombshell that she knew about Adrian.

But at least she gave him an opportunity to take care of the problem before Pope got involved.

Related: Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 9 Review: Shtf

I don't see how this is going to turn out well for Deran or Adrian. Now that Adrian got his sister involved, you can bet that she's going to try her hardest to get Adrian to cooperate with the police.

It had to have crossed Deran's mind when he came home and saw them talking.

And now that Smurf knows, Deran is going to have to make a hard decision. If I were him, I'd drown him in the surf.<...

A thousand expletives flew out of my mouth at the end of Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 9.

Most of them had to do with the fact we have to wait until Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 10 to find out what's going to happen next.

My head is spinning! Is yours?

There's so much to talk about, but first things first.

We're getting closer to finding out what happened to Colin, and I'm going to guess crazy Jed had something to do with whatever it was that happened.

Related: Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 8 Review: Ambo

The fact that Jed is alive and Colin is nowhere around tells me that Colin is most certainly dead.

And it wouldn't be surprising to find out that Jed was the one who killed Colin.

Jed could have killed Colin because he decided he wanted Janine for his own. Who shakes someone's hand as long as Jed did when he and Janine first met...

Wow. J. You just blew my mind.

It was a long time coming, and I can't say I'm sad, but J stepped up his game on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 8 when he took care of business in the worst way possible.

Goodbye, Mia. It was nice knowing you.

J blowing away Mia was shocking. But, and I'm not ashamed to say this, I cheered when he did.

Did anyone else think he didn't have it in him?

I sure didn't. But he did. At least it appears that he did.

He freaked out afterward, so let's go with it and not the possibility that he spared Mia in some way and tricked Pete.

And if he could kill Mia, he won't have any problems killing anyone else who pisses him off or gets in his way.

The strange thing about J, though, is that he's constantly going back and forth about h...

    Know Thy Enemy

It's getting a whole helluva lot more interesting in the Codys' world.

Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 7 was about a lot of things, but what struck me most was the baby situation -- both Renn's and young Smurf's.

You can all say what you want, but young Smurf is pregnant.

And I don't even know why that excites me, but it does. Maybe it's because I love the relationship between Colin and Smurf so much.

The guy truly cares about her. And even though she won't admit it, she cares about him too.

And the fact that she was vomiting in the toilet at the end of the hour confirms she's pregnant.

    She's not sick. She's carrying Colin's twins.

    Into The Black

    Well, damn, Janine Cody.

Smurf let all hell fly loose on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 6 not only in the current day but also in the flashbacks.

I don't know if it was the woman who was driving her nuts or just the idea that she had to go through chemo that set her off, but she wasn't having any of it.

It could be the woman's incessant talking about kids and grandkids was what sent her over the edge.

She might not show it, but she has to have some regrets about the way she raised her kids. And also about what she did to Lena.

After all she's been through in her life, she probably thinks she deserves a better way to die, and she's right.

    Reap

You reap what you sow, and the Codys are reaping a whole lot of peril.

The liklihood of the Codys surviving was knocked down a few notches on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 5.

Between Frankie's deceit, Angela's manipulations, Adrian's betrayal, and Smurf's sickness, things aren't looking good for the Oceanside, California crime family.

Pope needs to get his head straight.

He was definitely shocked to learn that Smurf had cancer, but his statement to her later about how he doesn't care if she dies, is Pope trying to deal with the inevitablity of his mother's death.

He doesn't know how to deal with the news.

The women of Animal Kingdom ruled the day on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 4, but nothing that happened with any of them was any good.

Smurf is down for the count. Renn is back. Frankie might be trouble after all.

Mia is a nightmare. And Angela? She's just a nosy and annoying biatch.

    Let's talk about Smurf first.

Smurf is in bad shape -- both physically and mentally.

At this point, we don't know if Smurf is dead or alive, but the future doesn't look bright for our favorite criminal matriarch.

She's trying to reconnect with her boys, but it may be too late.

She knows that they all probably hate her, but she's going to try her best to be a better mother until the end comes.

    Man vs. Rock

    Craig is the man.

Craig finally came into his own on Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 3 when Frankie challenged him to figure out a way to steal the sculpture.

There was a time when Craig was nothing more than a momma's boy., but he's finally pulled away from Smurf and that can be attributed to Frankie.

I'm not necessarily a fan of Frankie, but she has been able to bring something out in Craig  that wasn't there before: confidence.

If you remember back on Animal Kingdom Season 3, once she got together with him, she told him he didn't have to live under Smurf's thumb forever.

That is one of the reasons she included him in that sophisticated house heist -- besides the fact she needs a good looking partner to help her pull it off.

If she didn't see potential in him, she wouldn't have included him in that job or the current job they are working on together.
