White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

Two men, Matt Trent and Joe Potter, are assigned to an isolated outpost in the middle of an ice field. Potter is trying to sleep but the music outside his room makes it difficult. He goes to the mirror and checks himself, and glances at his photo of his girlfriend. He then goes into the mess room and turns off the music, and asks what Matt is doing. Matt explains that he's making Christmas dinner. He points out the bottle of wine on the table and says that it'd be good for them to have a drink and a meal and just talk. Potter says that he's not big on conversation but Matt points out that they've barely spoken in five years.

Potter wonders what they should talk about, and Matt suggests that they talk about why they're there on a dead-end assignment. He figures that something went wrong for both of them, and Potter admits that it was job or jail, and then asks Matt why he's there. Matt admits that he talked himself into trouble and finally says that he was a guru… but not the spiritual kind.

-----

Matt contacts his friend, Harry S, who is getting dressed for a Christmas work party he's going to gatecrash. He links with Harry via his Eye-Link and checks his clothing when Harry looks in the mirror. Matt gives him dressing and hairstyling tips to impress, and reminds him of the breathing techniques that they talked about. At the party, Matt brings up the page on the party's function room and tells Harry to walk in as if he belongs.

-----

When Potter wonders what he was doing, Matt explains that he was running a romantic service. At Christmas work parties, women want to let their hair down after a year surrounded by the same men.

-----

Matt has Harry pick up an empty bottle from the bar to use as a prop. Harry spots a woman, Jennifer, which he's interested in. Matt tells him to focus on her friend Amy while bringing up information on them from their social media. Harry spins a story Matt fed him earlier and the man with them, Dawson Welch, wonders who he is. Matt brings up Dawson's information and feeds Harry enough information to credibly claim they met at a BBQ. Harry then has Amy introduces him to Jennifer and continues reciting the story.

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

-----

Explaining his strategy, Matt tells Potter that shutting someone out makes them that much more likely to pay attention to the speaker. Much to Matt's surprise, Jennifer didn't fall for it and he figured her for an attractive outsider.

-----

Jennifer wanders off and Matt tells Harry to find an excuse to slip away. He goes to the restroom to urinate, while Matt streams it all to the other members of the viewing club that he and Harry belong to. Harry then goes back to the party and Matt tells him to talk to Jennifer directly and establish a rapport. One of the club members suggests that Harry takes a cynical approach and Matt passes it on to his client. Jennifer responds to it and complains about how she has trouble thinking at parties because of all the noise and she only got through the last one by taking pills. She assures Harry that she doesn't take them anymore, and Matt tells Harry to get Jennifer somewhere quieter.

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

-----

As he works on Christmas dinner, Matt explains that the key to seduction is focusing on the other person. Potter notices a clock on the wall and says that he's never noticed it in the last five years. When Potter glances at it again a few seconds later, it jumps forward an hour and a half.

-----

Harry and Jennifer find a quiet room and Jennifer talks about some men try to get into her head by sending messages. Matt is unable to access her private profile, and has Harry ask how long she's been there. When Jennifer says that it's been three years and she's planning on leaving soon, Harry smoothly assures her that it will be okay... using one of Matt's rehearsed speeches. Jennifer agrees and they share a toast. Jennifer spills her drink on Harry's pants and the club members applaud when she touches his leg. Harry offers to get her another drink and Jennifer says that she needs to think by herself.

-----

Potter says that some dork meeting a girl isn't much of a Christmas story, and Matt assures him that it gets better at the end.

-----

As he waits for Jennifer, Harry tells Matt that he really likes her and isn't comfortable with what he's doing. He talks about having all of them in his head, just as Jennifer comes back and overhears him. Harry shushes up when he sees that Jennifer is back, and she invites him to her flat. She says that it's her way of saying thanks, and Matt tells Harry to agree. Before Harry can respond, Jennifer kisses him and then apologizes, and Harry agrees.

-----

Potter wonders if Matt kept watching, and Matt claims that he didn't because his job was done.

-----

Matt continues watching through the Eye-Link with the other club members, and they figure the kooky decor indicates sexual adventures. Jennifer tells Harry that she'll meet him with drinks in her bedroom. Harry warns Matt that he wasn't expecting something to happen so soon and he's not sure if he can do it. Matt reminds him that he watched the other members. As they argue, Jennifer comes in and says that she needs Harry on the bed. He obliges and Jennifer says that they can't wait, and has him take a drink. She then talks about all of the voices in her head, and explains that she stopped taking the pills that the doctors gave her. Matt tells Harry to wrap it up early, while Jennifer rants about how she was going to take the drink to make the voices stop, but she hesitated until she met Harry. She figures that it's fate that they met because Harry hears the same voices.

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

Harry, dying, tries to explain but Jennifer doesn't believe him. She talks about the people in the government depots shouting at her, telling her what to think. Jennifer then takes a big drink of the poison, puts a funnel in Harry's mouth, and pours more of the poison down his throat.

-----

Potter wonders when Matt found out about it. Matt lies, claiming that he saw it on a newscast.

-----

Matt watches on the Eye-Link as Harry dies. He tells the other club members to destroy everything and then shuts off his monitor and walks down the stairs. Matt steps on his daughter's toys, setting them off, and his wife Claire comes out and asks what he's doing. When he finally explains, Claire "blocks" out his Zed-Eyes, making it impossible for her to see and hear him and vice versa.

-----

When he finishes cooking, Matt serves the dinner and reminds Potter that they all got Zed Eyes put in. He pours drinks and offers a toast to Christmas, and Potter finishes off the entire glass. Matt then continues, saying that Claire left him and took their daughter Mel and he came to the outpost to avoid any reminders of his old life. There's a sudden banging noise and Potter turns to see what it is, but there's nothing. Matt says that he didn't hear anything, and explains that his job had nothing to do with picking up girls. He explains his day at work and tells Potter to stop when he guesses what he did.

-----

A woman, Greta, is in a hospital bed watching the news while waiting for her operation. A nurse comes in with a snack and Greta finally brings herself to say that the toast isn't how she likes it. The nurse takes the tray away to get some more toast and Greta's doctor comes in and administers anesthesia. However, Greta wakes up a few minutes later and hears the doctor saying that she's going to remove "the pea." Confused, Greta sees herself being removed from her own forehead and in a reflection sees a small metal implant put in an egg-shaped holder, a Cookie.

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

Later, Matt turns on the Cookie and talks to Greta using a headset. He explains that he's with SmartTelligence and his job is to explain what's happening to Greta. Matt assures her that she isn't dead and that she's copy. Greta can see him on the Cookie's camera but she has no body and she's a copy of the real Greta's brain patterns. Greta wonders why he's imprisoned her, and Matt tells her that the real Greta had it done. They implanted the Pea in Greta's brain and left it there for a week, soaking up how Greta's mind works. The copy demands that she be returned to "her" body, but Matt says that they can't because the real Greta is occupying it. However, he tells Greta-copy that they're going to give her a simulated body and she suddenly finds herself in a white control room. Matt tells Greta-copy that she'll use the console to control the real Greta's house.

When Great-copy doesn't understand, Matt takes out two pieces of bread and asks how she likes her toast. He puts them in a toaster and tells her to focus on her preference, and tells her to push a button even though it's just symbolic. Greta-copy does so and the toaster activates, and Matt points out the house around them. He tells Greta-copy that she's now in charge of everything there for the real Greta, and brings up a monitor showing her sleeping. Shocked, Greta-copy says that she doesn't want to be in there but there's no exit and she starts screaming. Matt mutes her until the copy gets herself under control. Great-copy refuses to cooperate and Matt programs her to experience three weeks of nothing in only a few seconds. When he brings her back on line, Greta-copy begs him not to do it again but still refuses to cooperate... so he puts her into nothingness for another six months.

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

-----

Matt explains that he had to use the nothingness program to break them without causing them to snap entirely. If they went insane then they were only of use to the games industry.

-----

After six months of nothingness, Greta begs to do something--anything. Greta enters the kitchen and Matt tells her that she's set up and ready to go. As he leaves, Matt hits on her using the same story he gives to Harry later.

The next day, Greta-copy wakes Greta up and gives her her appointments for the day. Everything is just the way that Greta likes it.

-----

Potter objects, saying that it was slavery. Matt points out that Greta-copy wasn't real, and is surprised that Potter thinks otherwise. He wonders what Potter did to get to the outpost, since he figures that he must be a good man. Potter insists that he isn't a good man, and finally says that his father never liked him.

-----

Potter leaves the house with his girlfriend Beth Grey, and his father Gordon tells her to bundle up. Down the street, Potter has Beth stop so he can take her picture. Later they go to a karaoke bar to meet some friends for a party. Potter sings and calls Beth up to sing on her own. As she does, Potter keeps drinking and finally he has to go home with his girlfriend.

Later, Potter and Beth have an engaged couple, Tim and Gita, over for dinner. Beth helped get them together. Afterward, Beth pleads fatigue and goes to bed. As Potter dumps the trash, he finds a pregnancy test stick and realizes that it shows positive. He takes it to Beth and she confirms that it's hers, but says that she can't deal with having a child at the moment. Potter persists and Beth makes it very clear she doesn't want a baby at all. He realizes that she's drunk, and when he tries to argue with her, she blocks him. Furious, Potter smashes a vase and then walks out.
White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

The next morning, Beth slips out and keeps Potter blocked so that he can't apologize to her. Beth doesn't come back, and after a week Potter goes to her business. Tim and Gita tell him that Beth handed in her notice and disappeared. The block was still on and Potter can't even see her image in photos, or call her on the phone.

One day, Potter is out when he sees the still-blocked Beth, clearly pregnant despite the obscuration. He tries to get her to turn off the block, but a passerby calls the police and they issue a restraining order. Desperate, Potter writes letters to her and sends it to Gordon, but Beth still doesn't respond. All that Potter can do is go to Gordon's once a year on Christmas, because Beth is always there with her father for the holiday. Beth arrives with the baby but the block keeps Potter from seeing that as well. After four years, he secretly leaves her a present and can finally tell that she's a girl,

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

A few months later, Potter is watching the news when he sees Beth in a broadcast. She's died in a rail crash, and the block is dropped when the user dies. Potter goes to see his daughter for Christmas. He takes her a snow globe and goes to Gordon's house, and finds the girl playing outside. However, he discovers that it's an Asian girl, and realizes that Beth was seeing Tim on the side. When Potter goes into the house after the girl, May, he finds her in the kitchen with Gordon. Gordon says that Beth is dead and there's nothing for Potter there, and Gordon sends May to her room. He then tells Potter that he tore up the letters so Beth never saw them, because she was in a mess after leaving. Gordon picks up a knife and orders Potter out, but Potter demands to see his daughter and hits Gordon with the snow globe, killing him. As he stares at the corpse, Potter's bird clock chimes the hour.

-----

Potter looks up at the clock he saw earlier and realizes that it's the same one... and the outpost one is the same as Gordon's kitchen. Matt asks him what happened next.

-----

Shocked, Potter walks out of the kitchen, leaving the bloody snow globe behind. He drives into the nearest town and takes to the streets, drinking. The police eventually find and arrest him, but he refused to say anything about what happened. If he did, then Potter realized it would become real for him.

-----

As Potter demands to know where he is and what job they do, Matt asks him what they said and what he did.

-----

Eventually they tell Potter that May hid until Boxing Day, and then came down and found Gordon dead. She went out in the snow to get help and froze to death.

-----

Matt asks if Potter confesses, and sets the snow globe on the table next to him. After a moment, Potter admits that he killed Gordon. Matt pats him gently on the shoulder, and then announces that he knew he could get Potter to confess. Potter stares at him in surprise and Matt apologizes... and then disappears.

-----

Matt removes the virtual helmet and the police congratulate him on getting a full confession. When one of the officers says that it only took 70 minutes, Matt points to the Cookie on the table and says that he put Potter through five years of accelerated experience. The officer in charge, Gainsborough, then goes to Potter's cell and tells him that the pea they took out of his head gave them a full confession... and wishes Potter a Merry Christmas.

Back in the office, Gainsborough tells Matt that he's free to go now that he came through on his end of the deal. However, the other officers tell him that he'll be on the register for Peeping Toms. They remind Matt that he failed to report a murder. When Matt wonders what it means, Gainsborough explains that he's blocked... by everyone.

Matt goes outside and discovers that he's blocked from seeing everyone. Everyone sees him as a highlighted red blur, signifying he's a Peeping Tom.

White Christmas - Black Mirror Recap

-----

The Potter copy paces around the mock kitchen, and sees May's corpse lying outside in the snow.

-----

In the police station, one of the officers, Fenn, cranks the time setting up to a thousand years a minute. He figures that they'll give Potter--or his copy--a proper sentence. Gainsborough agrees but tells Fenn to leave it on for Christmas.

-----

The radio plays the same Christmas music over and over. When the Potter-copy destroys it, another one instantly appears and the music goes on... and on... and on.
