Fresh off of December's season finale of 'Treme,' David Simon ('The Wire,' 'Generation Kill' ) has agreed to extend his consistently fruitful relationship with premium cable giant HBO.

As usual for Simon, his next HBO project will tackle an often controversial topic, this one being the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the overall history of the civil rights movement he led during the 1950s and '60s.

'America in the King Years' is a critically acclaimed three-volume series of non-fiction books that chronicles the fight for African-American civil rights during that highly tumultuous period of U.S. history, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch.

The first volume, 'Parting the Waters' was released in 1988, and won Branch his aforementioned Pulitzer. The second volume, 'Pillar of Fire' came 10 years later, in 1998. The third and final volume, 'At Canaan's Edge' hit stores in 2006.

According to a Deadline report, Simon is set to write at least the first episode of HBO's miniseries adaptation of the book series, and will team up with 'Treme' co-creator Eric Overmeyer to executive produce the entire project to completion.

HBO originally acquired the rights to adapt 'America in the King Years' back in 2010, a deal which was largely spearheaded by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions. Winfrey will remain onboard this latest adaptation attempt as a producer. Interestingly enough, Oprah is also producing an MLK feature film at Paramount called 'Selma.' It's becoming increasingly clear that she won't rest until MLK's life has received the proper treatment on both the big and small screens.
