MTV Renews 'Scream' for Season 3

MTV Renews 'Scream' for Season 3

Get ready for more Scream because MTV has renewed the horror series for a third season.

But there's a catch: season 3 will only have six episodes. By contrast, season 1 had 10 episodes and season 2 had 12 episodes.

Another change is that showrunners Michael Gans and Richard Register will not be returning; new showrunners haven't been announced yet. Gans and Register were only at the helm for season 2, as Jill Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia were the showrunners during the show's freshman run.

No other details are known at this point, including which cast members are returning and the setting for season 3. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, there's rumors that the series will switch to an anthology format going forward.

MTV will air a two-hour Halloween special on October 18 that will see Scream move to a new location and take place eight months after Kieran's arrest. According to MTV, "Emma is struggling to focus on her future and who she really is after everything that has happened. ... Since the first anniversary of Piper's killing spree is upon us, Emma and her friends are determined to be as far from Lakewood as possible and Stavo has the perfect solution."

Scream has never been a ratings hit. Only the series premiere has drawn in more than 1 million viewers. And only one episode in season 2 reached half a million viewers.

The series stars Willa Fitzgerald, Sean Grandillo, Austin Highsmith, John Karna, Tracy Middendorf, Anthony Ruivivar, Santiago Segura, Amadeus Serafini, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Carlson Young.

Are you excited that Scream is coming back for a third season? Are you disappointed that it'll only be six episodes? Do you think the show should move to an anthology format?

The Scream Halloween Special airs Tuesday, October 18 at 9/8c on MTV.
