ABC's Fall 2016 Schedule: Comedy Expands to 5 Hours, 'Scandal' Pushed to Mid-Season

ABC's schedule for Fall 2016 includes even more comedy than ever before as well as five new shows. But there are a few noticeable absences, namely Scandal and the fact that Thursday nights are no longer 100 percent Shonda Rhimes.

For ABC's comedy, the network is expanding to two hours on Tuesdays, moving The Middle to help launch the new full night. ABC's eight returning sitcoms will all be back, joined by newcomers Speechless, about a family with a disabled child, and American Housewife (formerly titled The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport).

The new Hayley Atwell legal drama Conviction will take over Castle's old time slot Mondays at 10pm while Kiefer Sutherland's political drama Designated Survivor replaces Nashville Wednesdays at 10pm. The other new drama for the fall is Notorious, about defense attorneys and the media, which takes over for Scandal Thursdays at 9pm in between hits Grey's Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder.

The only other changes to the schedule include Agents of SHIELD being pushed to 10pm on Tuesdays (avoiding the curse of that time slot, where six new dramas have died over the past three years) and the second season of the anthology series Secrets and Lies will debut in the fall Sundays at 9pm.

For mid-season, ABC has Scandal, The Catch and American Crime, plus new dramas Still Star-Crossed and Time After Time, new comedies Imaginary Mary and Downward Dog and the gay rights limited series When We Rise.
