ABC Boss Talks 'Castle' Cancellation -- Plus Is the Original Finale on The DVD Set?

The letting go of Castle's co-lead Stana Katic and the series' later cancellation became one of the more controversial news stories of the TV year. Throughout all the anger, sadness and discussion, ABC remained relatively silent about the debacle.

Fans were left in the dark about why exactly Stana Katic (and co-star Tamala Jones) were being let go beyond vague budget issues. Fans didn't even know how season 8 would end to lead into a Beckett-less final season 9. Months later, the shroud of silence is being broken and we finally have a bit of an idea what went on behind the scenes during Castle's demise.

Deadline reports that at a press conference at the TCAs, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey talked about Castle's cancellation. When pressed about the mess surrounding Stana Katic being let go and the cancellation, Dungey explained, "That was a case where you have things running on parallel tracks. We were upfront with the studio that we may not be renewing Castle. But they had to prepare for Season 9 and do what they needed to do should there be a Season 9. Ultimately, the network's decision was not to go for Season 9."

The most infamous of those preparations probably came from something Castle showrunners were talking about for a while before the series finale. It was widely reported two final scenes were filmed for Castle season 8. One, the one that made it to air, would function as a series finale and the other would exist to set up season 9.

Alexi Hawley, who was one of the showrunners of Castle is still playing mum about what that second scene consists of and it seems like fans will never find out. TVLine asked Hawley in an interview about the difference between the aired and unaired versions of the series finale and whether fans will be able to see the deleted final scene on the DVD.

"The only editorial difference between the two [shootout] scenes was the cliffhanger version used some different shots at the very end to highlight the two of them on the floor together, rather than getting us into the tracking shot that took us to the time jump to the happy family," Hawley explained.

This seems to suggest that fans' assumptions about the original end of Castle season 8 are correct. The season was supposed to end with Beckett and Castle being shot and fading to black, unlike the actual ending which flash-forwarded to their happily ever.

Fans will have to keep speculating, however, because it was determined that the differences between the two finale versions was not enough for the unaired version to be included on the season DVD set. The DVD set will, of course, include all 22 episodes, audio commentaries, a blooper reel and other assorted deleted scenes.

So what do you think? Are you disappointed to know that you will probably never see the original version of the Castle finale? Do you want to see the original at all? How do you feel about the way the series ended? Did ABC make the right decision canceling the show?
