2018 DGA Award TV Nominations: 'Game of Thrones' Dominates

The seventh season of Game of Thrones was only seven episodes long, but it had a lasting impression on the Directors Guild of America. The DGA revealed their TV nominations for the best directorial achievements of 2017, and the HBO drama dominated the competition with three nominations.

The three episodes of Game of Thrones will compete against the season 2 finale of Stranger Things and the premiere of The Handmaid's Tale. Thrones has won the DGA Award for the past two years in a row, though it has never had more than one episode nominated in a single year. However, since the final season of Game of Thrones won't air until 2019, that means it won't be eligible at all for next year.

As for comedy, Veep will try to win its third DGA Award in a row, competing against Silicon Valley, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and two episodes of Master of None. All of the TV series nominees come from either HBO or streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.

And Natalie Portman should be happy because women are represented across the board. The nominated directors for The Handmaid's Tale, Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, one of the Master of None episodes and Story of a Girl (directed by Kyra Sedgwick) are all women. Female directors also picked up two nominations for Variety Special (including Amy Schumer) and three of the nominations for Children's Program.
