Why 'The Originals' Did Not Get an Early Renewal, Plus The CW Boss Talks Future of the 'TVD' Spin-Off
On the heels of the early pick-up of seven of The CW's fall TV shows for the 2017-2018 season during Sunday's Television Critics Association winter press tour, fans of The Originals are wondering about the fate of The Vampire Diaries spin-off. While it looks like the show may be in danger of cancellation, there's a reason why it wasn't included in the renewal list.
According to The CW president Mark Pedowitz, the renewal of The Originals wasn't announced simply because the show doesn't launch its new season until March.
"Julie [Plec] and I spoke ahead of time about this," Pedowitz said at the press tour. " The Originals has not yet premiered for the season. It'll probably be a discussion in May."
As for whether The Originals could continue even after its mothership series ends, Pedowitz remains optimistic but admits it's all about the numbers.
"I'm a big Julie Plec fan. I'm hoping The Originals will continue. A lot of it will depend on performance," he continued.
The Originals, which returns for its fourth season, will skip five years ahead, jumping at least two years ahead of The Vampire Diaries' timeline. But don't rule out any crossovers just yet. Matt Davis' Alaric is set to grace New Orleans in episode 8 of The Originals' new season.
The Originals season 4 will premiere Friday, March 17 at 8/7c on The CW.
