Nelsan Ellis, best known for playing Lafayette on HBO's True Blood, has died at age 39. In a statement, his manager revealed that Ellis passed away due to complications with heart failure.

Ellis, a Juilliard-trained actor, had his big break in 2008 with his role on True Blood as Lafayette, the flamboyant chef at Merlotte's. He earned acclaim and several awards for his performance.

This past year Ellis joined the cast of Elementary on CBS as Shinwell Johnson, an ex-con working with Joan and Sherlock to take down a drug gang he used to work with. His character was killed off at the end of the season.

True Blood creator Alan Ball released a statement calling Ellis "a singular talent whose creativity never ceased to amaze me. Working with him was a privilege."

While Ellis is best known for his TV work (he also guest starred on an episode of Veronica Mars), he also appeared in many films, including The Help.
