'Game of Thrones' Season 7: Ed Sheeran to Guest Star, Episode Count and More

Game of Thrones fans are one step closer to finding out how it will all end. Deadline reports that at SXSW co-showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss broke their relative silence about the final seasons of the epic fantasy hit. The pair finally disclosed the number of episodes that the eighth and final season will have and if the show will continue in some new form. Plus there is a pretty surprising guest star in the upcoming season 7.

Game of Thrones season 7, which premieres in July, will only have seven episodes rather than the usual 10. Game of Thrones season 8 will have even fewer installments. Weiss and Benioff confirmed at SXSW that the final season of the show will only have six episodes to wrap everything up.

Benoiff and Weiss were pretty optimistic about the fact that their last six episodes in season 8 won't be the last of Game of Thrones. The pair did all but confirm that HBO is working on a spin-off but they will have nothing to do with it. "I think HBO might well do [a spinoff] and I'm looking forward to watching it." Benioff said.

The writer has no intention of running the show with Weiss or at all. "I think its better for them to get new blood in with new visions," he explained. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Weiss agreed by joking his future project is "sitting in a cool, dark room for two months."

Weiss and Benioff didn't just look into the far future of Game of Thrones. They also discussed season 7 and specifically one big guest star that they had not announced until this point. Pop musician Ed Sheeran will apparently be appearing in at least one episode in Game of Thrones season 7. The impetus for the casting was Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark.

"We knew that Maisie was a big fan of Ed Sheeran and for years we've been trying to get him on the show so we can surprise Maisie," David Benioff explained. "This year we finally did it."

The casting might sound ridiculous and distracting but it is well within Game of Thrones' usual M.O. The show has had several bands and musicians cameo over the years. Sigur Ros appeared as the band at Margaery and Joffrey's wedding, Of Monsters and Men were cast as a Braavos band in season 6 and Coldplay's drummer Will Champion was part of the infamous Red Wedding. Ed Sheeran's role might be a bit larger than those but it wouldn't be that odd if he was just some random bard.

So what do you think? Are you looking forward to the end of Game of Thrones? Should a spin-off happen without D.B. and David? Are you excited to see Ed Sheeran? Are 13 episodes enough to wrap up the entire story?

Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere Sunday, July 16 at 9/8c on HBO.
