CBS Orders Full Season of 'Big Bang' Spin-Off 'Young Sheldon'

The new Fall TV season has its first official hit. CBS has given a full season order to freshman sitcom Young Sheldon after airing just one episode.

Young Sheldon, a prequel spin-off of The Big Bang Theory, had a special premiere preview Monday night and delivered stellar ratings. The premiere scored 17.21 million viewers, retaining nearly 100 percent of its lead-in, the season premiere of The Big Bang Theory at 17.65 million viewers.

Young Sheldon was the most-watched comedy series premiere in six years. However, it didn't quite match the more than 19 million viewers who tuned into the series debut of 2 Broke Girls (which had the added benefit of airing after the first appearance of Ashton Kutcher on Two and a Half Men following Charlie Sheen's departure).

The early full-season order is a huge sign of confidence from CBS, especially since the second episode won't air until Thursday, November 2 at 8:30/7:30c once Thursday Night Football comes to an end on the network.

Now CBS just has to wait to see if another new comedy, 9JKL, does as well next Monday, with The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in. If I had to guess, I'd say it won't.
